Three lost souls occupy a city church for a night – Harry, an English-born Jew and an ex-circus strongman; Francisco, an Irishman and Harry’s best friend; and the waif-like Maudie. First staged by the Abbey Theatre in 1975, where it provoked the most vocal disturbances in the Abbey since O'Casey's The Plough and the Stars, The Sanctuary Lamp questions religious faith and consolation.
Approximate Running Time: 2 hours; including 1 intermission
