Gloria Steinem once said “Power can be taken, but not given.” The quote serves as an echo through David Mamet’s play, in which a college professor and a young, struggling student engage in a dialectical duel that exposes explosive differences in their respective views on class, gender, and educational roles. In the process, traditional ideas of where power lies in the student/teacher relationship are turned on their head. To the end, both characters fight for the principles they passionately believe to be true.
Approximate Running Time: 2 hours, including one intermission.
This play is recommended for mature audiences.
