Johannes Rosmer, a former clergyman, lives peacefully now that his wife Beata is dead. Life at his family estate is free, thoughtful, and full of new, liberal ideas, thanks to Rebecca West–Beata’s companion who has conspicuously stayed on at Rosmersholm after her death. But when Dr. Kroll pays an overdue visit to enlist Rosmer’s help on behalf of the dying Conservative party, Rosmer and Rebecca’s plan for a new Free Will gets swept aside in a torrent of rumors, scandalous admissions, and the premonitory return of the town specter, the White Horse of Rosmersholm. Ibsen’s rarely produced masterpiece begs the question, "Do the dead control us?"
